While some conservationists seem hellbent on asking people to do without the conveniences of the modern era, I find it somewhat comforting that there are engineers working on solutions that don’t involve reverting to a pre-industrial lifestyle. One greentech startup called GreenCore Air has come up with an ingenious solution to free us from our electricity guilt: an A/C unit that draws its power directly from the very flaming ball of gas that heats our planet. How cool is that?

What makes GreenCore’s unit unique is the fact that it’s designed to run off of DC power instead of the typical alternating current, so there’s no need for an expensive power inverter. With a single 170Watt solar panel plugged directly into the GreenCore unit, this green machine can cool down a 600-square foot room. It’s also equipped with a battery pack to store energy for use at night. These miracle units are currently being test-driven by such esteemed institutions as McDonald’s and the US Navy.
